Basic Sewing

This basic sewing course will teach you all you need to know about how to sew. From learning about your sewing machine, to creating your own constructed outcome, we will guide you through all stages. Within this course you will learn the health and safety aspects of using a sewing machine, how to thread and maintain your machine and how to adjust tensions. We will show you how to sew on a variety of fabrics and how to construct basic seams, darts and folds.

For the first stage of the project, we can provide a structured project for a fashion outcome, such as a simple top, all patterns and basic materials are included (but we can guide you if you wish to purchase your own special fabrics). You will have access to a range of threads, yarns, buttons, ribbons and trimmings.
For those on the 7 week course, we can guide you in which fabric to purchase for another second project.

Creative Stitch

This creative sewing course will show you how to use free-motion machine embroidery methods to 'draw' with a sewing machine. We will show you how to applique, sew with 'dropped teeth' and embellish using a sewing machine. We also show you how to combine this with other creative methods such as needle-felting, dyed fabrics and batik. A highly creative course for those who would like to create with fabrics.

This course will begin with the principles of free-motion embroidery. You will then choose and develop an image, taking inspiration from your own visual sources or using some of out supplied images. We will guide you through a series of experimental samples within which you might incorporate needle felt, hand-painting, dying and batik. We will provide excellent contemporary contextual references to show you how textiles can be used as a contemporary and cutting-edge art form. You can choose whether to develop your outcome as an artwork textile illustration, or a product such as a handmade handbag or cushion. Don't be put off if you think you can't draw, you can trace images to get fantastic results.

Some basic sewing experience would be desirable for this course, but not essential. We are happy to teach learners of all abilities and levels of experience.

Sewing machines are provided, although you are welcome to bring your own machine (if using your own machine, it must have the function to 'drop the feed dogs' and come with an appropriate darning foot. Please let us know at the time of booking if this is the case)
